CP Negotiations - January Update

01-22-2010

 18 :49 EST

Brothers and Sisters,

We met with the CP negotiating committee again this week.  Without going into specifics, I can tell you that they were productive days.  We are dealing with work rule issues at the moment and these can get very complex. But we are having open and extensive dialogue and are even agreeing on some points. Bargaining is never easy but at least we are presently moving forward, albeit slowly.

Anyone who has even glanced through it knows that our Collective Agreement is quite complicated and many of the articles and applications are closely intertwined. Even minor changes can sometimes trigger huge repercussions to either party. Therefore, before we can contemplate even a small change, all scenarios must be reviewed and addressed carefully. We have to see what the effects are, not only to the membership at large but also to individuals.

You all know the economic climate out there and I'm sure you can imagine the company's position at the table. However, we are (and will be) continuing to negotiate until we have a fair and equitable contract in place.

We have already set the next bargaining dates for early February during CROA week.  For the next couple of weeks, both sides are going to be reviewing their positions and the work we've done so far. Then when we meet in Montreal, we can attempt to continue the forward momentum established in the last few sessions.

Negotiations, especially when they are moving forward, must be handled clearly and concisely, without any misunderstandings and patience is necessary. For this process to be completed properly, it cannot be rushed.

Though we are still apart on some major issues, the gap has lessened and both sides are, at least presently, focused on reaching an agreement.  Even realizing that negotiations can always take an unexpected turn for the worse, I still remain cautiously optimistic. I want to keep working on meaningful dialogue instead of confrontation, and if the company is of a like mind, then we cannot help but reach a resolve.

Stay safe, stay strong, stay united,

Bill Brehl
