Wilson’s Truck Lines workers win their battle!

A majority of the 172 workers employed by Wilson’s Truck Lines Ltd. have chosen to be represented by the Teamsters Union.

The unionization process was difficult seeing as the company fired over 40 workers even before the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) began counting the votes. Noteworthy is the fact that all of the fired workers are Sikhs. The OLRB nevertheless included their votes in the count. The workers were reinstated during the vote.

“We are very satisfied with the result of the count,” explains Craig McInnes, president of Teamsters Local Union 938. “Furthermore, the company reinstated the workers who were fired. It clearly shows that the workers are stronger when they stick together.”

Both owner operators and employees work for this transportation company. They will all be represented by the Teamsters Union once the OLRB has approved the application for certification, which should be done soon.

These workers deliver goods to the stores of the Metro and Food Basic food chains in Ontario.

“I am not surprised by the choice these workers made. They have chosen to secure their retirement, improve their wages and counter-attack their employer’s arbitrary decisions,” adds Robert Bouvier, president of Teamsters Canada. “The workers worry for their future, and unions represent their last line of defense.”

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
